Suppose you have no access to sea and everytime you need to go far away, you must walk to the shore through other's territory. If you have a faithful ally like the Papal States when you are a Catholic faction, giving them military access will enable them to go through your territories freely and expand at will. Now your non-crusading army will have to slog back home through Poland, Hungary or HRE for many turns, and I guarantee you your relationships with those nations will take a pounding if you didn't have military access.Ĥ. The AI will not usually trespass your territory if you didn't grant them military access, but sometimes they do that occasionally even not out of malice.
